Riot Barricade Buster is a depressing sign of the times

We couldn’t help but share this new vehicle accessory from SVI Engineering, a specialist manufacturer of armored vehicle products in South Africa. What may look like a bulky front wing on the front of this Toyota Land Cruiser 79 is quite the opposite. SVI has created what it calls a hydraulic riot scraper for its corporate customers, especially mining companies and governments.

SVI describes the job of the scraper as clearing a path through debris to allow security and medical personnel to access critical locations. And yes, this is something that mining companies and governments could do with it. We could think of a few others.

The scraper itself weighs around 100 kilograms, or 220 pounds, and can be lifted up and down by hydraulics. In its raised position, the scraper acts as a large front bumper. But when he’s lowered and different “angles of attack” are chosen, he can overcome whatever obstacles the rioters throw at him.

SVI provided a video (see above) that shows the scraper knocking down a low brick wall. We don’t know how the rioters would have the time or the skills to put up a brick wall, unless you come face to face with the International Union of Bricklayers. What looks more realistic is the scene depicted in footage provided by SVI (below) which shows a truck fitted with a scraper facing a pile of burning debris.

What is the cost of this riot control device? A relatively reasonable amount of $ 4,400. But manufacturing takes a month, so if your organization expects trouble, plan ahead accordingly.

We laugh, of course. Anti-riot vehicle accessories are nothing new and a logical extension of the armored vehicle market that is SVI’s bread and butter. These days, however, it’s not enough to protect your CEO or deposed dictator in their own car. You also need a vehicle up front to clear a path.
