GM’s 632 cubic inch 1000hp box engine is the biggest and most powerful ever
They say that when it comes to producing horsepower and torque, there is no substitute for displacement. Although this is a little less true nowadays with the super efficient turbocharged engines and, the folks at General Motors are clinging to that ideology with their latest cash engine, the ZZ632 / 1000, which has an impressive displacement of 632 cubic inches and was announced on Wednesday.
For those of you who aren’t used to working with cash, that’s 10.36 liters. For comparison, the quite massive Dodge Viper engine weighed only 8.4 liters and with two more cylinders. As its somewhat heavy name suggests, the 632 cubic inch box engine produces a whopping 1,004 naturally aspirated horsepower. It also produces 876 pound-feet of torque, and it does both with a 93-octane gas pump.
Besides its displacement, there are a few notable features that make the ZZ632 special. Chief among them are the RS-X symmetrical port aluminum cylinder heads, which, unlike many previous large block cylinder head models, have the same size intake and exhaust ports for each cylinder, this which ensures that all eight cylinders of the engine produce the same power.
The ZZ632 shares its block architecture with GM’s slightly less elephantine ZZ572 crate engine, but features a bore that has been increased by 0.040 inch. The engine stroke was also lengthened compared to that of the ZZ572 by 0.375 inch, which explains most of the increase in displacement. The engine also features forged steel connecting rods and crankshaft, which contributes to the longevity of the engine. GM claims the ZZ632 withstood 200 simulated dragstrip passes without a problem.
Unlike some of its other high-performance crate engine offerings, GM is not capping production for the ZZ632, and, best news for speed enthusiasts, the engines will be kept in stock rather than built to order. We don’t yet have a price tag for this engine monster, but we believe it will land somewhere north of the roughly $ 16,300 charged for the ZZ572.
