Beckwood delivers servo-electric and hydraulic presses for solid-state battery supplier

Being at the forefront of innovation as the market shifts from internal combustion engines to battery-powered electric vehicles is exciting

Beckwood Press Company, a leading manufacturer of custom hydraulic and servoelectric presses, automation systems and the Triform line of precision forming equipment, recently delivered a 500 ton 4 column hydraulic press and press 50 ton servoelectric at a solid state battery manufacturer in the United States.

Solid-state batteries are quickly becoming the preferred power source for electric vehicles because they are smaller, safer, lighter, and more efficient than lithium-ion batteries. These batteries use a solid ion-conductive material rather than liquid electrolytes, resulting in longer range and improved safety for today’s electric vehicles.

The 500 ton compression molding press is used to heat and laminate batteries at constant temperatures up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit through a hot oil system. In addition, the press is equipped with a load cell for precise force feedback.

The 50 ton custom servo-electric press is used to assemble the batteries. Additionally, the press is equipped with electrically heated platens with the ability to heat up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit for the ability to laminate the batteries. Using a servo-electric actuator instead of a hydraulic system for this application enables unmatched positional accuracy and repeatability as well as a more energy efficient and cleaner assembly process.

“Being at the forefront of innovation as the market shifts from internal combustion engines to battery-powered electric vehicles is exciting,” said Caleb Dixon, Beckwood Director of Sales. “These two presses show our ability to drive this innovation forward with our commitment to making valuable machines for the process. “
